Founded in 1965 by aerospace engineer Charles Kaman, Ovation Guitars revolutionized acoustic guitars by incorporating helicopter-inspired design, utilizing a synthetic, rounded "Lyrachord" back for improved projection and durability. Known for pioneered electro-acoustic models with piezoelectric pickups, Ovation became a staple for live performers, blending traditional wood tops with modern materials.
(How to decode a Ovation serial #)
The three most common Ovation model families are Balladeer, Legend, and Elite.
The Ovation Balladeer is a mid-priced electro-acoustic workhorse featuring a solid spruce top with a traditional center soundhole (often with oak-leaf rosettes) and a typically rounded, shallow, or deep Lyrachord composite body. It is known for a balanced, bright tone and strong plugged-in sound via built-in preamps.
The Ovation Legend is a premium acoustic-electric guitar known for its signature Lyrachord composite rounded back, solid spruce top, and excellent stage performance. It is known for a bright, balanced tone and typically includes a 5-piece mahogany/maple neck, ebony or rosewood fretboard, and advanced OP-Pro or OP24 electronics.
Most Ovation guitars list the serial number on the back of the headstock. Some acoustics place it inside the soundhole on a paper label, and older instruments may use a neck plate or stamped marking. If you cannot find it, check the headstock back and the neck joint first.
It typically identifies the production year, factory or plant code, and country of origin. Some serial formats also hint at model lines or production sequence, but that varies by era.
Serial formats change over time, and limited runs or custom shop instruments can deviate from standard patterns. Try removing spaces or hyphens, and if it still fails, reach out so we can review it and improve the decoder.
Note: This decoder works for Ovation, Adamas, Celebrity, and Applause guitars. If you try a serial number and the decoder is not able to decode it, please contact us and let us know so we can check the number and fix the decoder. Thank you!
