Common Ovation Models

The three most common Ovation model families are Balladeer, Legend, and Elite.

Balladeer

The Ovation Balladeer is a mid-priced electro-acoustic workhorse featuring a solid spruce top with a traditional center soundhole (often with oak-leaf rosettes) and a typically rounded, shallow, or deep Lyrachord composite body. It is known for a balanced, bright tone and strong plugged-in sound via built-in preamps.

Legend

The Ovation Legend is a premium acoustic-electric guitar known for its signature Lyrachord composite rounded back, solid spruce top, and excellent stage performance. It is known for a bright, balanced tone and typically includes a 5-piece mahogany/maple neck, ebony or rosewood fretboard, and advanced OP-Pro or OP24 electronics.

Elite

The Ovation Celebrity Elite is an acoustic-electric series known for its unique multi-soundhole design with laser-cut epaulets. It offers a balanced, clear sound and often pairs a Lyrachord composite mid-depth body for comfort and projection with onboard electronics for easy amplification.

How to find a serial number on an Ovation guitar

1. Inside the Sound Hole (Most Common)

  • Paper or Foil Label: Look directly through the sound hole. Most Ovation guitars have a label toward the neck end of the bowl. The serial number is often printed on a small silver or white sticker located above the main model badge.
  • Neck Block: On some older USA-made models (roughly 1968 to 1972), the serial number may be stamped directly into the wood of the neck block inside the guitar.
  • Near the Heel: Check the area between the main inside label and the heel of the neck. Some owners report finding a small sticker in this specific location.

2. Exterior Locations

  • Back of the Headstock: On certain models, particularly those made around 1995 or later, the serial number may be stamped or printed on the back of the headstock.

3. Tips for Locating It

  • Use a Flashlight: Because the bowl is dark and the stickers can be small, shining a light inside the sound hole is often necessary to spot the number.
  • Check the Bottom of the Bowl: If the label is missing, it may have dried out and fallen off; check the very bottom of the guitar's interior to see if it is rolling around inside.
